This is the last part of our blog series exploring server terminology. Today’s article focuses on the letter V and should give you the information you need to fill in those knowledge gaps!

Virtual Server Modern server systems are often so powerful that capacities are not fully used when they’re only running one server. This is where Virtual Servers come in. Server virtualisation enables users to install multiple, independent servers on the same hardware, letting them operate independently. This method means server capacities are utilised efficiently, reducing resource and cost.

Virtualisation In virtualisation, capacities of a system are divided (e.g. server virtualisation) or physical resources from different systems are combined (e.g. storage virtualisation). This creates a virtual version of physical servers, storage or network resources. The device requesting the resources is not even aware that resources have been combined or distributed. This is possible by interposing a “virtual machine” (VM), which translates user requests for the actual system and generates an abstraction level.

VPN VPN stands for ‘virtual private network.’ It is a self-contained communication network, which only allows members having logged in via VPN the access to internal data. It is transmitted via the internet. Thus, access to the private network via VPN is possible from any location. An example of how you may use a VPN in your day-to-day browsing is accessing your business e-mails remotely. A VPN connection allows you to do this securely from home. In this case, your local internet connection acts as an “extension cable” to the Internet connection at work. Moreover, using VPN guarantees privacy and security. That is because incoming and outgoing network addresses are scrambled – data is encoded on the sender’ side and decoded on the receiver’s side. In summary, VPN provides a secure, private connection between two systems.
